Who Knew? – Mazda’s Sustainable Earth by 2030

Mazda has a goal to create a future in which people and cars coexist with the Earth. This long-term plan for technology development, which they are calling Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030, includes innovative technologies and a partnership with Toyota.

The vision includes perfecting the internal combustion engine, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and introducing electrification technologies.

Mazda has reinvented the gasoline engine, being the first to successfully use compression ignition and a supercharger to increase engine efficiency by 30 percent and torque by 10 to 30 percent. This technology allows this gasoline engine to outperform diesel fuel efficiency while also lowering emissions.

Plans are in place to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 50 percent of their 2010 level by 2030 and by 90 percent by 2050. With hybrid and electric car technology appearing to be leading the way, Mazda believes the new Skyactiv-X engine technology will play a key role in cutting emissions to extend the lifespan of the gasoline-engine era by providing clean, efficient, and affordable vehicles to the greatest number of customers worldwide.

In addition to the more efficient internal combustion engines, starting in 2019 Mazda plans to introduce electric vehicles and other electric-drive technologies in areas that require clean energy or restrict certain vehicles to reduce air pollution.

To quickly respond to the demand for electric vehicles, Mazda has partnered with Toyota to build a $1.6 billion manufacturing plant in the United States that will create 4,000 jobs and manufacture 300,000 vehicles annually. They hope to open the plant in 2021. Both companies will also work together to develop electric vehicles, connected cars, and advanced safety technologies.

In line with the vision for people and cars to coexist, Mazda is developing advanced safety and autonomous driving technologies including enhancing and standardizing safety fundamentals such as correct driving position, pedal layout, and good visibility.

The i-ACTIVSENSE technology provides advanced safety features, which help drivers recognize and assess potential hazards, may be standard in some markets starting in 2018.

Autonomous driving technologies are currently being developed in line with Mazda’s human-centered Mazda Co-Pilot concept for 2020, aiming to make the system standard on all models by 2025.

The goal is to protect the Earth and build cars for customers who value driver-oriented, technology-laden cars that beg to be driven, and autonomous innovations that will complement rather than detract from the driving experience.
